Montreal, (QC) —  Pablo Rodriguez, Member of Parliament for Honoré-Mercier issued the following statement today, following Andrew Scheer’s speech at the Montreal Chamber of Commerce:

“Today in Montreal, Andrew Scheer misled Canadians once again. Conservatives like Doug Ford and Andrew Scheer pretend they are for the people but then on the first opportunity, cut taxes for the wealthiest while cutting services for everybody else.

“Here are just six ways Andrew Scheer’s cuts would make life more expensive for middle class Canadians:

  • Voted against the Canada Child Benefit
  • Voted against cutting taxes for middle class Canadians while raising taxes on the wealthiest 1%
  • Opposed increasing Canada Pension Plan benefits
  • Would raise age someone could qualify for the Canada Pension Plan from 65 to 67
  • Opposes a universal national pharmacare plan to lower the price of prescription drugs
  • Voted against increasing student financial assistance like grants and loans

“And Scheer repeated his empty promise not to cut the Health and Social Transfer. But Scheer isn’t telling the full story. By choosing his words carefully and failing to commit to maintaining the existing formula, he will be cutting more than $3 billion from health care over the next two years. It’s a textbook Conservative attempt to promise Canadians no cuts are coming only to slash the services and cut the support people need if they are elected.”
